A former employee of a small manufacturing business in Pinellas County was sentenced to 57 months in federal prison for mail and tax fraud. The person was ordered to pay $2.5 million in restitution to the owner of the company, and $819,000 to the Internal Revenue Service.
The person pleaded guilty to the crime of running a scheme to defraud the manufacturing company, which occurred during a span of four years.
Checks to the company were diverted into an account that was set up separately from the business, a release said.
Within the company’s QuickBooks accounting software program, fraudulent invoices reflecting much lower prices than the true invoices were created, and he remitted payment for the lower amounts.
