The Study of Buying Behavior of Consumers in Florida

Florida’s Bureau of Economic and Business Research (“BEBR”) was established in 1983 to conduct research concerning attitudes and buying behavior of consumers in Florida. Subsequently, the Bureau changed it’s name to the UF Survey Research Center (UFSRC). UFSRC’s Research Program has become a state-of-the-art survey research program with a 93-station computerized lab that operates seven days a week. The Bureau was renamed the UF Survey Research Center (“UFSRC”) in 2001.

UFSRC’s mission is to: (a) collect, analyze and generate economic and demographic data on Florida and its local areas; (b) conduct economic and demographic research that will inform public policy and business decision making; and (c) distribute data and research findings throughout the state and the nation.

The program conducts a regular monthly survey of 500 households in Florida. Staff members engage in research concerning relevant issues publish the results in scholarly journals and make presentations at professional conferences. The UFSRC generates a monthly Florida Consumer Confidence Index to assess what Floridians think about Florida’s economy. The Indexes can often be very useful tools when business owners are creating plans for the future. UFSRC also conducts customized surveys for a variety of federal, state, and local government agencies; university research centers; non-profit organizations; and for-profit businesses.

BEBR produces Florida’s official state and local population estimates and projections. These estimates and projections are used for distributing state revenue-sharing dollars to cities and counties in Florida and for budgeting, planning and policy analysis by state and local government agencies, businesses, researchers, the media, and members of the general public.

BEBR conducts Florida’s monthly consumer confidence survey and surveys for clients such as the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, the Florida Department of Transportation, the Florida Public Service Commission, the Kaiser Family Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, the RAND Corporation and academic researchers at UF and other universities. The monthly consumer attitude survey monitors changes in the consumer confidence of Floridians, providing an important indicator of the state’s economic outlook.

BEBR has published the Florida Statistical Abstract each year since 1967. This award-winning research volume of statistical data about Florida is the leading source of data on Florida and its cities and counties, providing information on population, housing, employment, income, education, health, tourism, elections, and much more.

The Economic Analysis Program was formed in 2002 through the merger of two longstanding  BEBR programs: Forecasting and Policy Studies. Staff members conduct research on a variety of economic issues that have policy implications for the state of Florida. Recent topics have included economic conditions that affect the demand for transportation infrastructure; the relationship between income growth, population growth and regional physical characteristics; regional differences in price level indexes; alternative methods for certifying special educators; and the impact of smoking bans on restaurant sales. BEBR staff members make presentations on Florida’s economy to business, civic and government groups throughout the state and often provide analytical insights to members of the media.

The UFSRC also generates a monthly Florida Consumer Confidence Index modeled after the University of Michigan’s national Consumer Confidence Index to assess how Floridians feel about the economy.
