Business Leaders Use Mobile Computing to Their Advantage
If you are a business owner or hold an executive position in a larger enterprise, you would be well advised to contemplate what effect mobile computing will have upon the future conduct of normal, every day, business processes. There can be little doubt that, ultimately, the impact of mobile computing will be significant.
News about smart phones and tablets is covered in newspapers, science journals, trade publications as well as the Wall Street Journal. However, not much has been written about how a business person should consider this technology strategically. Inevitably, it will impact your day to day business activities.
Of course, you can control how important mobile technology will be to your business, but tech savants suggest that your control will be limited. Your customers and competitors will determine how important it is to the market you serve. Further, competitors may well use these technologies to their advantage even if you don’t.
Some who work in a business-to-business environment might consider these trends to be less important, because they won’t have much impact in that milieu. That could well be the case for a while, but only for a short while. After all, in the final analysis, Business-to-Business customers are also consumers. Thus, many of the important trends associated with the “consumerization of technology” can have an effect on almost all business-commerce environments to some extent. For example, the acronym “BYOD” (Bring Your Own Device), are beginning to sweep through business enterprises large and small.
Now, the conventional wisdom is that the first thing to address when discussing “mobile” is inevitable, exceptional growth. Each generation of computing, from mainframe to minicomputer, from the mini to the PC, has been a huge improvement upon the prior generation. The consensus among experts is that: (a) mobile computing will be no exception and (b) within the next five years, mobile will become the dominant form of computing. Imagine that!
Another piece of conventional wisdom is that unit sales of mobile devices (phones and tablets) will be outstrip sales of current PCs and laptops. Although that might be hard to fathom, advocates of that prediction argue that, currently, approximately thirty percent (30%) of the global population can access the Internet and eighty-six percent (86%) percent has access to some sort of mobile phone. The same proponents state that the number of global Internet users will roughly double in the next five years and most of those will have access to “mobile”, making it an exceedingly attractive venue by which entrepreneurs will access new markets.
According to Cisco’s Visual Networking Index, by the end of 2012, the number of mobile-connected devices will exceed the number of people on earth, and by 2016 there will be 1.4 mobile devices per capita. That means more than 10 billion mobile-connected devices just four years from now.*
