Mobile Device Sales Continue to Soar

Business Mobility Planning

Personal computer (PC) sales steadily decline while sales of mobile devices continue to rise.  Gurus predict that iPad sales alone will reach 148 million devices in 2013 and combined Smartphone and tablet shipments will greatly exceed PC sales by 2016.  Those predictions reflect the reality that mobile devices (a) are rapidly becoming the preferred computing platform for many people and (b) now provide 12 percent of all connections to the Internet.

Mobile devices have impacted the means by which individuals deal with their personal and business milieus.  In recent years the devices have become more user-friendly, while their capabilities have increased. So-called “touch and gesture based simplicity” has become quite popular, because it has enabled many folks to set higher goals regarding intuitive, usable interactions with technology.

Recently, mobile devices have become the natural “convergence devices” of choice, because they are telephones, text communicators, cameras, web browsers, barcode scanners, map atlases, GPS units, payment devices “” and everything in between. As a result, postal mail, phone books, shopping lists, and street maps are growing increasingly obsolete due to the capabilities of smartphones.

The changes, with regard to how people utilize mobile devices to simplify their lives, have been appearing rather quickly. That process has accentuated the ever increasing gap between the status quo of today and the potential of tomorrow.  “Mobile” is fundamentally and rapidly reshaping business models and marketplaces. Accordingly, business entities that have a token mobile presence fall further behind the “curve” every day.

Although businesses entities of all sizes are taking note, there remains a significant chasm between consumer and employee expectations and corporate mobile offerings, including those offered by larger companies. There is a consensus among some experts that the full potential for Mobile business will not be reached until purveyors of products and services fully understand that (a) marketing via suitable mobile outlets is an absolute necessity and (b) marketing approaches must be tailored to the medium.
