Mobile Shopping Making Retail Salespeople Adapt to Mobility

Retail Sales Evolving Due To The Mobile Shopping Phenomenon

Every day mobile applications and sites increase their importance to all types of shoppers. Many folks involved in sales/marketing have wondered if their positions will survive this so-called revolution. A growing number of marketing gurus believe that retail marketing/salespeople need not worry about their jobs, but should start to adapt to the inevitable changes.

Shoppers can now check if an item is in stock, locate a product on mobile maps of stores, scan items for prices and purchase items, all from their mobile devices. Some salespeople may be apprehensive regarding their future, because their roles will decrease. Others argue that their roles will merely evolve.

Many marketing experts suggest that, even though mobile apps are useful tools for consumers to access the information they seek, those apps will not supplant the face-to-face contact with sales people. Further, many believe that shoppers experience an enhanced, more integrated in-store experience when consumers are browsing on mobile, while also being able to seek help from salespeople equipped with iPads and in-store kiosks. Enthusiasts suggest that the dynamic, “omnichannel experience” creates a seamless customer tour that begins with mobile browsing and ends with an in-store transaction aided by a salesperson.
Increasing numbers of marketing/sales experts argue that “Mobile” has only been improving the shopping experience for shoppers who can (a) research before shopping and/or during shopping in order to and make better informed decisions and (b) can compare prices and quality of items.

Some retailers argue that these advances will increase “showrooming” and/or the number of visitors who enter stores in order to try on a shirt, but then buy it on the Internet at a lower price. Others believe that these innovations should only encourage retailers to enhance the shopping experience for their customers. Other retailers believe that some shoppers want experiences that often motivate them to spend a bit more for goods or services in exchange for the added value they perceive from superior service assistance. So, most of those retailers have concluded that the job of the salesperson now includes ensuring that a customer will make an in-store purchase as opposed to online purchase at Amazon.

It is now conventional marketing wisdom that prospects/customers will use their phones. Thus, marketers and retailers would be well advised to adapt to this burgeoning mobile shopping phenomenon and take advantage of its marketing potential.
